Before I go into how to install Outlook Express I must first explain one thing. Voordat ik ingaan op het installeren van Outlook Express moet ik eerst uitleggen een ding. Your ISP should provide you with all the all the information that is required to configure outlook express. I hope from my explanation of IMAP in a previous post that you have an understanding of why you want to configure outlook express with the IMAP Mailbox protocol. In my previous post I have shown you how to configure your pop3 mailbox (or several) and also IMAP mailboxes. You may also remember that IMAP mailboxes are the safest as all the mail remains on the mail server. Nu zal ik laten zien hoe om te gaan met het opslaan van Outlook Express mailboxen.
If your hard disk fails and you lose all your data then with IMAP all you mail is safe. Als uw harde schijf defect raakt en je verliest al uw gegevens vervolgens met alles wat je IMAP-mail veilig is. Huh! what’s that Doc, what’s the difference between pop3 or imap ? wat is dat Doc, wat is het verschil tussen pop3 of imap?

Well one of my previous posts ( Configuring outlook express ) gave you the instructions to configure your mail connection using outlook express . Nou een van mijn vorige posts (Het instellen van Outlook Express) heeft u de instructies voor de configuratie van uw mail verbinding via Outlook Express. In case I didn’t tell you, the configuration was set up using POP3 and just to make you a bit cleverer with words this stands for “ Post Office Protocol 3 ” In geval heb ik u niet zeggen, de configuratie is ingesteld via POP3 en alleen om te zorgen dat u een beetje slimmer met woorden dit staat voor "Post Office Protocol 3"

There is another e-mail protocol that you can also use called IMAP . Er is nog een e-mail protocol dat u kunt ook gebruik maken van zogenaamde IMAP. Making you even more clever this stands for “Internet Message Access Protocol” You really didn’t want to know this so lets just stick with POP3 and IMAP. Maakt je nog meer slimme dit staat voor "Internet Message Access Protocol" U echt niet willen weten dat zo kunt gewoon met POP3 en IMAP.

What is the difference between these two, I bet you would love to know. Wat is het verschil tussen deze twee, ik durf te wedden dat je graag zou weten. Well I am not going to get too technical here, I may even confuse myself. Nou ik ben niet van plan om hier te technisch, ik kan er zelfs verwarring mezelf. All I know is that ISP’s (Internet Service Provider) love POP3 and hate IMAP. Alles wat ik weet is dat ISP's (Internet Service Provider) liefde POP3 en IMAP haat. So here goes. Dus hier gaat.

Lets first talk about servers and clients, there are lots of different ones out there but we will just talk about “mail servers” and “mail clients” In the normal case the ISP runs the mail server and your PC runs the mail client. Er zijn veel verschillende e-mailclients, wat denk je van jou heet, ik durf te wedden dat je denk dat rechts "outlook express". POP3.

POP3 is the protocol that allows outlook express to access your ISP’s Mail Server and download any mail to your hard disk that is not currently on the hard disk on your PC. Depending how outlook express is configured the email on the mail server may get deleted once it is downloaded. Afhankelijk van de manier waarop Outlook Express is de configuratie van de e-mail op de mail server kunnen krijgen verwijderd zodra deze is gedownload. Most times you can configure your outlook express to tell the mail server not to delete any mail for so many days or delete it immediately or if delete it in outlook express. Why do they do this? Waarom doen ze dit? Well they do not want all this mail clogging up their hard disks, besides that, they usually limit the amount of space you are allowed to use on their hard disks. Some of them are not very nice about it either. Sommigen van hen zijn niet erg mooi over het evenmin. If you fill up your quota on their disk they stop receiving e-mail for you. Some are a bit nicer and start deleting the oldest messages to make room for new ones. IMAP.

IMAP is almost the reverse of POP3. IMAP is bijna het tegenovergestelde zijn van POP3. All your mail is kept on the Mail Server and any new mail is download to your PC as well. Al uw e-mail wordt bewaard op de mail server en eventuele nieuwe mail is te downloaden naar uw pc ook. Can you see now why ISP’s don’t like IMAP. Zie je nu waarom de ISP's, niet als IMAP. Your right, they have to maintain enough disk space to keep all your mail. Uw recht, ze hebben te behouden genoeg schijfruimte om al uw mail. So much so that most of them do not allow IMAP. Zozeer zelfs dat de meeste van hen willen niet toestaan dat IMAP.

So what are the benefits of IMAP over POP3. Dus wat zijn de voordelen van IMAP boven POP3.

Answer these two questions. Beantwoord deze twee vragen.

1. 1. If you are using POP3 and you lose all your mail on your PC for whatever reason, how do you recover your mail? Als u POP3 en je verliest al uw mail op uw pc om welke reden dan ook, hoe denkt u uw e-mail?
2. If you are using IMAP and you lose all your mail on your PC for whatever reason, how do you recover your mail. Als u gebruik maakt van IMAP en je verliest al uw mail op uw pc om welke reden dan ook, hoe denkt u uw e-mail.

Well for number one you don’t, unless you have saved your mailboxes periodically and most people don’t. Wel een aantal voor u niet, tenzij u uw mailboxen op gezette tijden en de meeste mensen doen dat niet.

For number two all you have to do is reconfigure outlook express again and hey presto all your mail is back again. Voor nummer twee enige wat je hoeft te doen is opnieuw outlook express opnieuw en hey presto al uw mail is weer terug. I assume that this is obvious to you why. Ik neem aan dat dit duidelijk is voor je waarom.

It is unfortunate that ISP’s limit the use of IMAP as other advantages are. Het is jammer dat ISP's beperken het gebruik van IMAP als andere voordelen zijn.

•  You can have multiple PC’s configured and receive exactly the same mail on each.  Je kunt meerdere PC's geconfigureerd en krijgen exact dezelfde mail op elk. This is useful if you have a desktop and a laptop you can get the same e-mail on each. Dit is handig als u beschikt over een desktop en een laptop krijg je hetzelfde e-mail op elk. Also useful for businesses who need several people to access the same mailbox. Ook handig voor bedrijven die behoefte hebben aan meerdere mensen toegang te krijgen tot dezelfde mailbox.

•  You can have several IMAP e-mail accounts and access all of them in the same window.  Je kan verschillende IMAP e-mail accounts en de toegang ze allemaal in hetzelfde venster. With POP3 you have to switch between each Identity. Met POP3 moet je omschakelen tussen elke Identiteit.

If you have your own webhost you do not have the limitations as with an ISP, configure as many e-mail accounts as you need with as much space as you need.
